A Clinical Expert Who Is Also a Mom: Why I Built Copper Sky Academy

Updated: Feb 8

As a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) with 25+ years experience, I built Copper Sky Academy to the clinical standard my own son (pictured here) deserved—and that every student with a language-based learning difference requires.

Built for Him, Open for You

When you look at the leadership of most specialized schools, you typically find one of two profiles: career administrators focused on general school management, or well-meaning parents and educators who, while passionate, lack a deep clinical or administrative background. While these leaders are dedicated to running a building, they are often forced to view your child's challenge through a purely academic or emotional lens.

At Copper Sky Academy, our leadership is built on a different foundation. I lead this school with the 25-year clinical expertise of a Speech-Language Pathologist, but more importantly, I lead it with the heart of a mother who has been in your shoes. I don't just manage a school; I engineer a therapeutic environment. This dual perspective is what makes our model unique:

The Clinician's Eye: Where an administrator sees a reading struggle, I identify the underlying phonological processing breakdown. Where a non-clinical founder sees a hurdle, I see an executive function deficit.

The Mother's Standard: Because I've sat on your side of the IEP table and navigated the system for my own son, I refuse to settle for "good enough." Every curriculum choice and every classroom strategy must pass the test of being high-quality enough for my own child.

The Problem with "Good Enough"

For years, I sat on the other side of the table. Despite my decades of professional experience helping other people’s children navigate language-based learning differences like dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia, I found myself struggling to find a school that truly "got it" for my own child.

I visited the big-name academies and the "specialized" private schools. But through my clinical lens, I saw what was missing: a school where the owner isn't just an administrator or an advocate, but a practicing specialist. I realized that even in the best schools, there was a clinical gap. The people making the big decisions didn't have the diagnostic depth to see why a child was truly stuck. I knew my child—and yours—deserved better than a "one-size-fits-most" approach to neurodiversity.

Clinical Authority Meets Parental Empathy

Because I own and operate Copper Sky Academy, I am able to combine high-level clinical precision with the nuanced care of a parent. This makes our school environment fundamentally different from those led by traditional administrators:

• I speak the language of the IEP: I know what it’s like to fight for services and feel like your child is being reduced to a test score.

• I understand the "After-School Collapse": I know the school day doesn't end at 3:00 PM—it often ends in exhaustion and tears at home. I designed our school day specifically to prevent that burnout.

• I see the "Hidden" struggles: My 25 years as an SLP allow me to see the subtle links between language processing and math (dyscalculia) or motor-planning issues (dysgraphia) that general educators often miss.

Closing the Specialist Gap

In many larger institutions, specialists are "pull-out" service providers. There is a gap between the therapist’s office and the teacher’s desk. At Copper Sky, that gap doesn't exist.

As a clinician-owner who is on the ground every day, I am personally invested in every student’s "lightbulb moment." We utilize evidence-based, multisensory remediation not because it’s a trend, but because I’ve seen it change lives—both in my clinic and in my own home. We focus on strengths-based learning because I know that our children are often the brightest in the room; they simply need a different key to unlock their potential.

A New Path to Success

I didn't just build Copper Sky Academy to be a business; I built it to be the school I couldn't find for my own son. If you are tired of explaining your child’s needs to people who don't quite seem to grasp them, I want you to know: I hear you. We are a place where clinical precision meets a mother's intuition, ensuring that no child ever feels "less than" because of how their brain is wired. I built this school for my son, but I'd love to show you how our clinical model can work for your child, too.

Let's discuss how we can bridge the gap between "good enough" and truly thriving.
